ALPIMED CLIMA

Funded by the European Union in the Interreg ALCOTRA program, the ALPIMED CLIMA project aimed to understand and act on the effects of climate change at the level of the Italy-France cross-border area. Both knowledge actions on physical phenomena and awareness-raising actions in the territories were carried out.

The project

The project lasted from June 2019 to June to November 2022. The main objectives were to consolidate climate data, also making them accessible so that all territorial actors could be made aware of the impacts of climate change; experimentation to detect and ensure the development of spatial planning tools, including virtuous practices to combat climate change; and to support the mountain economy in the face of climate change. Moreover, ALPIMED CLIMA aimed to bring together actors in the Mediterranean Alps around common goals of combating climate change.

Results

  • Implementation of strategic and spatial studies to improve knowledge
  • Experiments to reduce resource consumption and protect the environment
  • Actions to disseminate, raise awareness, and involve all publics in favor of the climate
  • Adoption of a transboundary climate strategy
  • Definition of a climate model at the level of the Mediterranean Alps

CIMA Research Foundation’s contribution

CIMA Research Foundation led the analysis of possible impacts on the hydrological cycle deduced from a high-resolution climatological scenario. It was possible to estimate the changes conditional on the occurrence of such a scenario, in particular: changes in annual and seasonal precipitation, changes in temperature, changes in water availability in the hydrographic network, in the soil and in terms of snow accumulation.
A number of meetings were also held on a specific municipality in the Imperia area (Pigna) to raise awareness among local stakeholders about the impacts of climate change not only on the territory but also on local economic activities. Thus, starting from what is already occurring, some shared adaptation actions were hypothesized to be proposed to the administration.
CIMA Research Foundation was commissioned by Arpal, the implementing party on behalf of Regione Liguria.
