Master’s degree Engineering for Natural Risk Management

Innovating for CIMA Research Foundation means starting from the training of new generations and preparing them to correctly manage the natural risks that, in the context of climate change, are becoming more frequent and devastating. For this reason, CIMA Research Foundation, as part of the exchange activities planned with the University of Genoa in relation to the teaching support agreement, has provided support for the activation, starting in September 2017, of the second cycle of the degree course in Engineering for Natural Risk Management (NatRisk).

CIMA Research Foundation will provide not only its own laboratories, but above all the “know-how” that its researchers have gathered in over ten years of field activities for the planned teaching and training activities.

The NatRisk master’s degree program, entirely in English and lasting two years, aims to build a professional figure able to manage natural risks in its various aspects. The NatRisk graduate is going to be an engineer able to deal with the technical aspects of the problems without a single specialization in only a risk area. Thanks to a cross-culture on risk management the NatRisk graduate will know the operational aspects of the various areas to be able to talk with all the specialists working in the different sectors: from forecast to prevention, from monitoring to emergency management.

In Italy there are other courses on similar topics but the innovation and uniqueness of this specific course lies in the particular cut given to the management of natural risk by CIMA Research Foundation, national and European leader in this sector. The NatRisk course includes lectures and a final semester dedicated to internship with the operational centers of the National Civil Protection System for the purpose of writing the thesis. A practical approach is also envisaged if it is possible within the active collaborations between CIMA Research Foundation and the operational centers of Arpa or other national and international bodies.

Possible employment opportunities will be in the civil protection sector (at local, regional or national level), in international organizations dealing with disaster management, in regional or international development banks (such as World Bank), in non-governmental organizations, in industrial, insurance and business sectors regarding the management of emergency and security plans.
