Two online courses for ASEAN countries

Thanks to the coordination of the Italian Department of Civil Protection, CIMA Research Foundation has developed for the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) two online courses dedicated to alerting tools and to the involvement of the population in risk management

On February 3, two new online courses have been presented, developed by CIMA Research Foundation on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), with the coordination of the Italian Civil Protection Department, for the civil protection of the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The two new trainings, developed in asynchronous mode (which therefore allows participants to follow them independently) follow the technical view carried out in 2019 by ASEAN representatives at the CIMA and ACROTEC Foundations and are dedicated to two different topics. The first course is dedicated to Early Warning Systems (EWS) for risk reduction and, more specifically, to the use of the myDEWETRA.world platform as a support tool for EWS. Among the objectives of the training, therefore, there is the knowledge of this new integrated system of the Italian Department of Civil Protection, developed with the technical and scientific support of the CIMA and ACROTEC Foundations, used for forecasting, monitoring and surveillance of floods and fires.

The second course is dedicated to the involvement and awareness of the population in risk management. The involvement of citizens in civil protection activities, and in particular in planning for risk management, is in fact a key element for the resilience of communities. The training is therefore dedicated to the most important aspects of participatory planning, and also includes the adaptation of emergency management plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The courses were presented during an online meeting to MAECI’s Director General for Mundialization and Global Affairs and to ambassadors and civil protectors from ASEAN countries. “The pandemic has been a strong stimulus for training modalities that do not take place in-person,” comments Marco Massabò, program director of the CIMA Research Foundation. “In particular, the two new courses respond precisely to the need to stay close while being distant. But, above all, they represent a concrete activity to strengthen the cooperation between the Italian and ASEAN civil protection systems”.
