During the National Civil Protection Week, CIMA Research Foundation participate to local and national events
The National Civil Protection Week, from October 13 to 19, organizes conferences, exhibitions, drills, schools events. The week starts in conjunction with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction of the United Nations, which is this year dedicated to the reduction of disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services.
During these days it will be possible to spread the knowledge of civil protection good practices and system, to promote the active participation and to share policies. As a Competence Centre of the Italian Civil Protection Department, CIMA Research Foundation won’t miss the meeting. From the scientific knowledge to the awareness of citizens, and from the awareness to the choice of the behaviours to follow: this is our vision for the risk reduction, the civil protection and sustainable development. This is the common thread that will accompany us during the week.
«Risks deriving from natural phenomena have always been present in our society, but they have evolved over time. We need to learn to recognize them from a scientific point of view in order to understand not only how to face them, but also how to live with them in a perspective of sustainable development, as is required by the Sendai Framework and the Agenda 2030», says Luca Ferraris, president of CIMA Research Foundation. «The week is a great opportunity to share the knowledge about risk reduction between experts, the citizens and policy-makers: awareness originates from knowledge, and it is crucial for activating society and keep the correct behaviours, both in the public and private sectors ».

Volcanic risk: the Exe Flegrei drill
Napoli, October, 16-20
The Phlegraean Fields are a broad area in the north-west of Naples. Some years ago, an updating of their civil protection plan started.
During the National Civil Protection Week, there will be a drill, which will take place between Wednesday 16 and Sunday 20. During the drill, a variation of monitoring parameters will be simulated, with the shift from the yellow, to the orange, to the red alert (representing the imminent eruption) and there will be the evacuation of part of the population from the Red Zone. The drill will be an important opportunity to test and implement the operative aspects and the procedures of risk management.
CIMA Research Foundation will be in the Quarto Municipality, one of the Red Zone municipalities, where in May an experimental participatory path for the civil protection planning was launched. During the drill, the researchers will observe the impact of a participatory approach on the drill activities.
