The project aims to strengthen the dissemination of the High Quality Whale-Watching® (HQWW®) Label within waters under Italian jurisdiction. It is structured as an integrated set of actions including the mapping of operators, their training and the certification process, as well as the implementation of audits aimed at verifying compliance with the rules of the Label and assessing the sustainability of the activities carried out. The outcomes of these audits are evaluated by the Italian HQWW® Commission. The project also provides for the ongoing management of the Label through continuous dialogue and regular exchanges with the operators involved, supported by training activities and promotional initiatives aimed at increasing its visibility and fostering wider dissemination.
GOALS AND EXPECTED RESULTS
The project is fully aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributes to the conservation of marine ecosystems and cetaceans through the promotion of sustainable observation practices. In particular, it aims to reduce disturbance to species and impacts on habitats by encouraging responsible tourism models through operator certification, training on best practices and compliance checks. Raising awareness among customers on board fosters informed and long-lasting choices, while training activities strengthen operators’ professional skills and environmental knowledge. The project therefore supports high-quality coastal and marine tourism capable of generating lasting economic opportunities while respecting the environment, enhancing virtuous operators, promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth and, at the same time, strengthening a multi-level partnership network among institutions, research bodies and economic operators.
CIMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION’S CONTRIBUTION
As a partner of ACCOBAMS and the certification body for the High Quality Whale-Watching® label in Italy, Fondazione CIMA is engaged in coordinating and developing the activities necessary for the implementation of the Label at national level. In this context, the Foundation is responsible for mapping whale-watching operators operating from Italian ports and for organising training courses addressed both to operators interested in joining the Label network and to public bodies working closely with these stakeholders. Fondazione CIMA is also responsible for carrying out audit activities aimed at verifying compliance with the criteria and guidelines set out by the Label. The strength of the HQWW® network is also based on continuous and constructive dialogue: for this reason, throughout the year, the Foundation maintains constant contact with operators, promoting B2B meetings and providing support. Through the project, Fondazione CIMA also participates in public events across Italy to enhance the visibility of the Label and to promote the importance of sustainable and responsible outdoor practices.
