JASON – Gauges for navigational safety

The JAugeS pOur la sécurité de la Navigation – JASON project aims to capitalise, in a coordinated manner, on scientific research, technological advances and the results of previous projects in the fields of environmental protection and maritime–port security within the geographical cooperation area of the Interreg IT-FR Maritime Programme. In this context, JASON focuses in particular on the analysis of alternative energy sources – both propulsive and non-propulsive – with significant environmental impact, as well as on issues related to autonomous ships and maritime–port cybersecurity, taking 2050 as the reference time horizon.

GOALS AND EXPECTED RESULTS

Through a joint strategy developed by the partners, the project seeks to define a technical, environmental and economic knowledge framework concerning navigation safety in the 2050 scenario. The objective is to make this framework available by integrating it into upskilling activities addressed to personnel operating in the maritime space, as well as through practical exercises. These activities form the basis for the drafting of a cross-border Plan, which will also include shared measures for the management of navigation-related incidents. The Plan is intended to generate positive effects not only for the partner territories and the directly involved target groups, but also for other territorial contexts, thanks to an approach oriented towards transferability and replicability.

CIMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION’S CONTRIBUTION

CIMA contributes to the development of the knowledge framework on navigation and the associated risks, with particular reference to the implementation of the Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) of the North-Western Mediterranean and to the potential effects of climate change on the ecosystems of the project area. This body of knowledge supports the assessment of risks related to future navigation, also in relation to the introduction of new technologies. On the basis of this know-how, CIMA provides useful content for the upskilling of onboard personnel and contributes to the drafting of a cross-border strategic action plan aimed at safer navigation.
