Following an agreement with the Veneto Region, CIMA Research Foundation has participated as a subcontractor at the HOLISTIC project between 2015 and 2016. The project aimed to implement the tools necessary for the prediction, prevention and monitoring of forest fires risk on the Veneto territory. CIMA Research Foundation has carried out research, experimentation, technical and scientific support and training to the Region and to the institutions involved in forest fires risks.
The goal of the HOLISTIC project was to adopt national level tools at a local scale. For this reason, CIMA Research Foundation has implemented Propagator and RISICO tools, specifically tailored for the Venetian territorial context. Both Propagator and RISICO were implemented in the 3D RTE application in use at the Environment Department – Civil Protection Service of the Veneto Region.
Other activities included technical and scientific support for adapting the RISICO model on a 100-meter spatial regional resolution with the inclusion of the fuel model paper, made available by the Region itself. The implementation of a web app enabled for real- time use of the freeware Fire Weather Indices Calculator application, developed by the Swiss Federal Research Institute of Forest, Snow and Landscape Research and licensed under BSD.
HOLISTIC activities have also provided support and training for staff at the Regional Functional Centre, on the use of forest fire tools developed by CIMA Research Foundation.
