EW4All is an initiative of the UN General Secretary that aims to provide Early Warning Systems (EWS) for all by 2027, hence ensuring protection from weather and climate hazards. The initiative coordinated by UNDRR and WMO and it is developed around four main pillars: Disaster Risk Knowledge and Management; Detection, Observation, Monitoring, Analysis and Forecasting; Warning Dissemination and Communication; Preparedness and Response Capabilities. Within the first pillar, CIMA Research Foundation is carrying out the project Developing the Knowledge Base for EW4All Initiative: Handbook on the Use of Risk Knowledge for Early Warning Systems.
The project
The first pillar of the EW4All Initiative, Disaster Risk Knowledge and Management, is coorinated by UNDRR and aims to increase risk knowledge in different countries so that they are equipped with adequate capacity and technical expertise to systematically collect, analyze, and disseminate risk information for use in Early Warning Systems. In this context, CIMA Research Foundation has been commissioned by UNDRR to produce a Handbook on Available Knowledge Regarding Risk for Early Warning Systems. The handbook, which will also provide technical support for all EW4All Initiative partners, will be a practical guide for improving the quality, targeting, and effectiveness of early warning systems by harnessing knowledge about risks.
Indeed, the text will bring together all available knowledge on the information chain for EWSs, from data collection to data analysis; a special focus will be on the application of this knowledge.
