The project aims to promote and strengthen the concept of “citizenship” as a sense of belonging to the global community. This translates into a concrete contribution to fostering change – individual and collective – for a more just and sustainable world, thus achieving Climate Justice.
The initiative is based on the three pillars of Global Citizenship Education (ECG) – formal, non-formal, and informal education, which operate both in the school setting and through extracurricular activities.
The young people and teachers involved in the project are accompanied on a growth path that will make them the changemakers of the future, as through their newly acquired knowledge, they will be able to initiate awareness-raising events on climate justice issues, helping to spread knowledge about sustainable development and climate change.
Goals and expected results
The main objective of Changemakers is to strengthen ECG as a strategic lever for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, with a particular focus on Climate Justice. The project aims at the cross-cutting integration of ECG in schools, nonformal education, and active citizenship pathways, developing cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral skills. Activities include hackathons, workshops, activism pathways, digital teacher guides, and training.
A relevant output is the collection and analysis of up-to-date data on students’, teachers’, and citizens’ knowledge and perceptions, to improve educational practices related to climate change and increasing awareness and capacity for action, especially among young people, at the national level.
CIMA Research Foundation’s contribution
CIMA Research Foundation is responsible for organizing training and empowerment activities through MIUR-accredited courses for secondary school teachers, which provide technical and scientific tools on climate change, disaster risk reduction, and civil protection. It also collaborates on the design of online modules and capacity-building courses for youth associations, providing experts and concrete case studies. Finally, CIMA coordinates the “Hack for Climate Justice” event in Genoa, in synergy with the European project I-CHANGE, promoting innovative actions and active participation. The event, aimed at young people aged between 20 and 35, offers an interactive experience based on the simulation of climate negotiation dynamics (Climate Action Simulation). The goal is to bring out what would be needed to address climate change by exploring effective and real-world solutions to this global challenge.
