On December, 12th and 13th, within the training week organized by the Italian Civil Protection Department, the representative of the Pacific Small Islands Developing States visit the Centre of Competence CIMA Research Foundation, which presents the tools developed for natural hazard risk mitigation
Exchange of experience and knowledge are the key words for the week organized by the Italian Civil Protection Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. From December 9th to 13th, the National Civil Protection Service hosted a delegation of the Pacific Small Islands Developing States (PSIDS: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu). The visit aimed to strengthen technical and scientific knowledge, as well as the international collaboration for disaster risk reduction (more information here for the press release of the Italian Civil Protection Department).
December 12th and 13th were dedicated to the visit of CIMA Research Foundation, which shared its knowledge and experience in risk mitigation and civil protection. In particular, three issues were addressed: early warning systems, risk assessment technologies and real time monitoring.
CIMA Research Foundation’s researchers and technician presented the myDewetra integrated system used for the hydro-meteorological events and wildfires monitoring and forecasting. MyDewetra enables early warnings thanks to the integration of geospatial data coming from institutional stakeholders. Concerning risk assessment and real time monitoring technologies, RASOR, a tool for multi-risk analysis, ACRONET, an open source system for rain and flood monitoring, and IT-Alert, for the emergency communication to the citizens, were also presented to the delegation.

For this reason, this visit was fundamental for us. To be confronted with other realities and to share our own is the basis for scientific and technological innovation. In doing so, we can reduce disaster risk, as requested by the Agenda 2030 and the Sendai Framework, one of the main areas of CIMA Research Foundation’s work”.
