SWEEP – End-to-end performance simulator activity of the WIVERN mission

The SWEEP project aims to develop the first version of the performance simulator for the WIVERN mission, one of the candidates for the European Earth Explorer 11 program, currently in the initial study phase.
The advanced SWEEP simulator aims to reproduce the operation of the entire mission, from the observed scene to the extraction of scientific data. Highly configurable, to represent all the elements that influence data collection and processing, SWEEP intends to verify the system’s performance at different product levels and support the development of data analysis algorithms by the scientific community.

Goals and expected results

The project is divided into two main objectives:

  1. Develop the SWEEP simulator
  2. Use SWEEP to evaluate the mission’s performance

For the development of the simulator, the following activities are planned:

  • Define the technical and functional requirements, including those related to design, performance, interfaces, and the operational environment
  • Identify the models to be used in the various modules of the simulator
  • Design the overall architecture and the connections between the modules
  • Develop, integrate, and test all the components of SWEEP

For the evaluation of the mission’s performance, the following steps are carried out:

  • Define, together with ESA, a set of reference scientific scenarios
  • Create the necessary input scenes for the defined scenarios
  • Generate the simulated products
  • Perform error analysis to assess the reliability of the results

CIMA Research Foundation’s contribution

CIMA Research Foundation is responsible for defining and generating, in collaboration with ESA, a set of reference scientific scenarios to be used as input for the SWEEP simulator to evaluate its performance.
