The “Services d’assistance technique au programme d’alliance mondiale de lutte contre les changements climatiques” (Technical Assistance Services to the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Haiti Program) project aims to reduce Haiti’s vulnerability to climate change by strengthening the government’s capacity to integrate environmental sustainability and climate adaptation into national policies and programs.
CIMA Research Foundation is involved in developing a National Coastal Zone Management Integral Plan, with the specific objective of increasing the resilience of the country’s coastal areas. The plan seeks to prepare the territory for future challenges, such as rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and the increased frequency of extreme weather events, by promoting a proactive approach to risk management.
Goals and expected results
Key technical aspects of the mission are:
- Climate risk assessment: updated analysis of coastal vulnerabilities and identification of key risk-prone areas
- Adaptation action planning: development of strategies to mitigate identified risks and integration of adaptation measures into coastal management
- Governance and institutional coordination: clear definition of roles and responsibilities among the involved institutions and strengthening of intersectoral coordination
- Capacity-building programs for institutions and local communities
- Monitoring and evaluation system: definition of indicators to measure the effectiveness of implemented actions and creation of a regular reporting mechanism
The main expected outcome is the National Coastal Zone Management Integral Plan, based on a robust climate risk assessment that can classify different coastal systems according to exposure and vulnerability and identify the best mitigation and adaptation strategies to implement.
CIMA Research Foundation’s contribution
CIMA Research Foundation leads a consultative group, providing technical contributions to socioeconomic vulnerability assessments, engagement with local stakeholders, and report preparation. Indeed, the Plan development process follows a participatory approach, including regular exchanges with local authorities and workshops for discussion and knowledge sharing. This approach ensures that the adopted strategies effectively respond to the needs of both the community and the territory.
