CLIMAAX

Funded within Horizon Europe Programme, CLIMAAX (CLIMAte risk and vulnerability Assessment framework and toolboX) aims to provide support for adaptation and risk management and in the development of Climate Risk Assessments (CRAs) to several European regions.

How does the project work?

Citizens are experiencing the dramatic consequences of climate change all around the world. An acceleration of societal adaptation is pivotal, but the risk profiles of communities and regions display an immense diversity. The European landscape of disaster risk management and climate adaptation is far from uniform. This sheer diversity in risk profiles imposes a challenge to the implementation of the European Union Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, aiming to support every European region to improve their resilience to climate change impacts.

CLIMAAX will provide financial, analytical, and practical support to improve regional climate and emergency risk management plans. The project will engage a large Community of Practice to co-creates the framework and toolbox and co-define the financial support application and monitoring criteria.

Started in January 2023 and ending in December 2026, CLIMAAX is designed to significantly contribute to the harmonization and consolidation of the practice of climate risk assessments (CRAs), leaving a substantial legacy for upcoming European initiatives.

What are the expected results?

  • A standardized CRA framework built on current community experience and best-practices;
  • A Toolbox with data, models and utilities to provide access to European and global open data archives integrated with local data and procedures;
  • Five European pilot regional CRAs to shape the framework and toolset;
  • Financial support for at least 50 regions to execute a context specific CRA;
  • CRA guidance material and online helpdesk for other European regions;
  • A proposal to upscale results into the future operationalization of the regional CRA support function

What does CIMA Research Foundation do?

In the first phase of the project, CIMA Research Foundation’s activities will be focused on defining a framework for local and regional climate risk assessment and will contribute to develop the CRA Toolbox by sharing its knowledge both related to natural hazards (mainly focused on forest fires) and to risk assessment.

In the second phase of the project, CIMA will be responsible of the open call for selecting more than 50 European regions and communities that will receive specific funds for executing the CRA in their area. We will also contribute to support these regions/communities in the implementation and upgrade of the CRA methodological framework and toolbox.
