Gli ingenti danni subiti dalle antiche abitazioni, uniti al flusso migratorio verso le coste proprio di quegli anni, portarono numerosi abitanti del piccolo borgo di Brancaleone, in provincia di Reggio Calabria, ad abbandonare le loro case. Fu fondato intorno al quinto secolo da monaci cristiani in fuga dalle persecuzioni subite in Grecia, Siria e Cappadocia.
