The project focuses on seagrass meadows, wetlands, coastal lagoons, and habitats of endangered species in nine pilot areas located in Albania, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain.

Activities include the development and validation of a holistic monitoring approach aimed at assessing the combined effects of various stressors, such as contaminants, marine litter and microplastics, noise and light pollution, invasive species, habitat degradation, and climate change. Building on the Plastic Busters initiative, MIRAMAR brings together research centers, universities, NGOs, public authorities, and protected area managers to translate scientific knowledge into coordinated mitigation and restoration actions.

GOALS AND EXPECTED RESULTS

The project’s main objectives include monitoring the effects of multiple environmental stressors on key Mediterranean ecosystems, harmonizing innovative methods for data collection and analysis, and jointly developing nature-based solutions for environmental mitigation and restoration. Expected outcomes include the establishment of a validated holistic monitoring framework, the improvement of tools and protocols for assessing cumulative impacts, the production of evidence-based guidelines to support protected areas and public authorities, as well as greater alignment with European and Mediterranean environmental policies.

Through Living Labs, capacity building, and co-creation with local stakeholders, MIRAMAR promotes more effective governance, strengthens long-term ecological resilience, and fosters coordinated transnational action across the Mediterranean basin.

CIMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION’S CONTRIBUTION

As part of the project, CIMA Research Foundation is contributing to Work Package 2 by supporting the design and implementation of field activities aimed at testing harmonized protocols for monitoring cumulative stressors in marine ecosystems. Specifically, CIMA participated in the offshore survey campaign in the Pelagos Sanctuary, conducted from May 19 to 30, 2026. Activities focused on collecting data on marine litter, including macroplastics and microplastics, and on assessing the multiple environmental pressures affecting coastal and pelagic habitats.

CIMA also contributes to the monitoring of threatened species and marine biota, with a particular focus on seabirds and marine mammals, supporting the assessment of the potential impacts of stressors on sensitive species and habitats and contributing to the development of science-based mitigation and restoration actions.

MIRAMAR was launched with the aim of improving the Mediterranean region’s understanding of and ability to respond to the cumulative impacts of multiple environmental pressures on vulnerable ecosystems.

[162
144
post-17679","progetto","type-progetto","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-sea","stato-progetto-ongoing
["GET
