{"id":550,"date":"2019-11-29T10:22:57","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T09:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimafoundation.org\/2019\/12\/23\/satellite-monitoring-of-italian-floods-in-november-2019\/"},"modified":"2022-09-29T08:18:37","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T08:18:37","slug":"satellite-monitoring-of-italian-floods-in-november-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cimafoundation.org\/en\/news\/satellite-monitoring-of-italian-floods-in-november-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Satellite monitoring of Italian floods in November 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the floods that hit Italy in November 2019, the Italian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.protezionecivile.gov.it\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Civil Protection Department (opens in a new tab)\">Civil Protection Department<\/a> activated CIMA Research Foundation, its Centre of Competence for hydro-meteorological risk, for a satellite monitoring of affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, data from Sentinel-1 have been utilized. Sentinel-1 is part of the European Space Agency mission within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Copernicus Programme (opens in a new tab)\">Copernicus Programme<\/a>. It can provide images by night, day and under any meteorological condition. These data, combined with hydrometric river level data, have allowed for the monitoring of the evolution of floods such as those generated by the Po River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below, we propose an example of two maps generated\nthanks to an algorithm developed by CIMA Research Foundation. These maps show\nthe situation around the municipalities of Alessandria, Pavia and Piacenza on November\n25<sup>th<\/sup>, at 5.35 UTC and around the municipalities of Pavia, Piacenza\nand Cremona on November 26<sup>th<\/sup>, at 5.25 UTC. The permanent waters &#8211; Po\nRiver ant its tributaries &#8211; are coloured in blue, while the flooded areas are\nin azure. The effects of the Po flooding are clearly visible in the many azure\nareas around the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Mappa-allagamenti-25-nov.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-983\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following the floods that hit Italy in November 2019, the Italian Civil Protection Department activated CIMA Research Foundation, its Centre of Competence for hydro-meteorological risk, for a satellite monitoring of affected areas.
