Cities are increasingly at the forefront of the challenges posed by climate change. More frequent heatwaves, extreme weather events and rapid urbanization call for new knowledge to better understand how urban environments influence climate and, at the same time, how they can be designed to become more resilient. <\/p>\n\n

Against this backdrop, Andrea Zonato<\/strong>, researcher at CIMA Research Foundation, has been elected to the Board of the International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC)<\/a>, one of the world’s leading scientific organizations dedicated to advancing urban climate research. From August 2026, Zonato will join the Association’s governing body, contributing to its activities and strategic direction. <\/p>\n\n

This appointment also strengthens CIMA Research Foundation’s presence within a global network of experts committed to developing knowledge and solutions that help cities become more resilient to climate change.<\/p>\n\n

An international network advancing urban climate research<\/h2>\n\n

Established to promote research on urban climate, the International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC) brings together an international community <\/strong>of climatologists, meteorologists, urban planners, architects and researchers investigating the interactions between cities and the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n

The IAUC fosters dialogue across disciplines and institutions<\/strong> by promoting international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge on urban microclimates, the urban heat island effect and climate change adaptation strategies<\/strong>. Today, the Association represents one of the leading global reference networks for the scientific community working on urban climate and city\u2013atmosphere interactions. <\/p>\n\n

Addressing the challenges of urban climate research<\/h2>\n\n

More than half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, and cities account for a significant share of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, they are among the environments most exposed to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n

Understanding how buildings, streets, construction materials and green spaces shape the urban microclimate is essential for addressing phenomena such as the urban heat island effect and for developing effective adaptation strategies. Research in this field combines observations, numerical modelling, environmental data and urban planning to support public authorities and decision-makers in designing cities that are safer, more sustainable and more liveable. <\/p>\n\n

These scientific advances provide essential evidence to help policymakers and urban planners develop resilient cities that are better prepared to cope with the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n

Andrea Zonato’s appointment to the IAUC Board further strengthens CIMA Research Foundation’s contribution to the international scientific community working on urban climate.
