Yet, this new year is not bringing \u201cnew life\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimafoundation.org\/en\/italy-snow-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Snow Water Equivalent (SWE)<\/a>. Our monitoring confirms a national deficit of -63% <sup data-fn=\"7401a022-60c7-4ee0-845b-e75f76261fab\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"7401a022-60c7-4ee0-845b-e75f76261fab-link\" href=\"#7401a022-60c7-4ee0-845b-e75f76261fab\">1<\/a><\/sup>. reflecting the critical situation across the Alpine arc and the Apennines after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimafoundation.org\/en\/news\/low-temperatures-but-limited-precipitation-the-snow-season-gets-off-to-a-slow-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">December\u2019s initial assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/21155812\/embed#?secret=f2dE3PESQC\" data-secret=\"f2dE3PESQC\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"700\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe causes of this deficit are not uniform across the territory,\u201d explains Francesco Avanzi, researcher at CIMA Research Foundation. \u201cIn the Alps, the lack of precipitation is slowing snowpack formation, despite relatively cool temperatures. This trend reflects the lack of significant snowfall events, even though temperatures have been somewhat cooler than in recent years.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The role of the Alps as \u201cnatural water towers\u201d for Italy cannot be overstated. Reduced water contributions from Alpine basins directly affect water availability for agricultural, domestic, and industrial use, especially in spring and summer. Historical data show that a snow-poor winter often leads to lower river flows in summer, exacerbating drought risks.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Apennines: between surges and sudden stops<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Alps are struggling, the Apennines are no better off, though the dynamics differ. Heavy rainfall, instead of translating into durable snow accumulation, has often been accompanied by above-average temperatures, leading to rapid snowmelt. A striking example is the Tiber River basin, which shifted from near-average conditions to an -88% <sup data-fn=\"36ddc99b-0e4a-430d-bb99-b5a46b782347\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"36ddc99b-0e4a-430d-bb99-b5a46b782347-link\" href=\"#36ddc99b-0e4a-430d-bb99-b5a46b782347\">2<\/a><\/sup>deficit in just a few weeks. This is classic \u201cephemeral snow\u201d behavior.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/21155955\/embed#?secret=6JCooiMl3y\" data-secret=\"6JCooiMl3y\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"700\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEphemeral snow is a typical phenomenon in milder snow regions,\u201d Avanzi explains. \u201cIt occurs when abundant precipitation combines with elevated temperatures, preventing snow from consolidating and persisting on the ground. This results in almost immediate melting, with significant implications for local water resource management. This type of snow, which melts just days or weeks after falling, is historically more frequent in the Apennines than in the Alps. However, future scenarios marked by climate change suggest that these conditions will increasingly affect the Alpine region as well. The rapid shifts from intense but episodic accumulations to extended melting periods can create significant imbalances in river basins, negatively impacting local ecosystems and communities\u2019 ability to manage water resources effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">December forecasts indicated an unstable start to winter, and current data confirm this trend. In some areas, the snow season began nearly a month late, amplifying the contrast between accelerated accumulation periods and subsequent steep declines. This volatile pattern reflects the ongoing impacts of a warming climate, which is altering traditional snow accumulation dynamics.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between past and future: analysis and forecasts<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many Italian regions, this winter\u2019s start ranks among the poorest for snow on the ground since 2011. Data reveal striking similarities to critical years such as 2016, 2022, and 2023.
