The National Adaptation Planning for Integrated Water Resources Management in Belize, funded by Green Climate Fund, is a national programme that aims to address the main challenges in implementing climate change adaptation planning in the water sector. In this context, the initiative implementer by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (CCCCC) aims at strengthening flood observation, monitoring and forecasting systems and enable the National Hydrological Service of Belize to undertake meaningful adaptation actions to mitigate flood-related impacts.
How does the project work?
This is expected to be achieved through the enhancement of the hydrological observation network by installing monitoring stations in high-risk or high-vulnerability locations; the development of an operational flood forecasting model; and the updating of flood forecasting procedures to ensure effective use of global and regional products, as well as the systematisation of forecasts verification, recording and publication.

What does CIMA Research Foundation do?
In this context, CIMA Research Foundation was commissioned to develop, in collaboration with the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), a flood forecasting chain on a pilot basin in northern Belize, in support of the National Hydrological Service. The project, which began in October 2022 and is scheduled to end in August 2023, will deploy and adapt to Belize the operational chain FloodPROOFS, developed by CIMA Research Foundation, based on the Continuum hydrological model and fed by numerical weather forecasts and ground and satellite observations. The results will be published and stored on the local version of the myDEWETRA platform, managed and maintained by CIMH.
