CIMA Research Foundation has started collaborating with Lebanon during a project funded by the Italian Cooperation, aimed to implement a forest fire Early Warning System in the country. After a few years from the end of the project, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Resource have requested CIMA Research Foundation to implement a flood alert system in the country as well.
Thanks to World Bank funds, CIMA Research Foundation was able to extend the work already done in the past, upgrading it with the latest technologies and tools and including also the flood Early Warning System. In addition, an operations centre was created within the direct prime minister’s dependence for improving the institutional context in disaster risk prevention and management.
A third project funded by the Italian Cooperation was carried out in collaboration with the Lebanese NCSR to renew the tools implemented so far and to add some new technology such as a loss data collection and a multi-risk report too in order to create a multi-risk assessment, with particular reference to the southern Lebanon region.
Training at various levels has also been carried out, in particular with NCSR trainers who then organized training courses for the institutions and communities involved. The ultimate goal is to strengthen real-time monitoring across the country, with particular focus on three pilot basins, and to carry out a quantitative assessment of potential disaster risk in the South Lebanon region.
