OBSERVE TO PREDICT, PREDICT TO PREVENT.

CIMA Research Foundation's logo synthetically summarizes the very aim of the organization: in fact the Galileo statement is assumed as the policy of the Foundation.

The observation of our planet, from global to very detailed scales, is absolutely necessary to predict incoming extremes of climate as well as environmental changes and crises.

Our theories and models are founded on observations; by observations they are verified or falsified.

The right of a person to be protected from the extremes of climate, weather, ground motions, bad infrastructure management, industrial failures, in our post industrial society is presently acknowledged by the common law.

One of the aims of the Foundation is not only to make the predictive tools more robust but also to examine their inherent uncertainties.

Predicting to prevent is a tool for social cohesion.

In less developed countries, where disease, malnutrition and limited access to safe water and air significantly reduce life expectancy, the right to be protected, in the sense we recognize it has no meaning.

More basic issues deserve to be focussed upon.

One of the aims of the Foundation is to understand how social and environmental mechanisms work and to diffuse knowledge for robustly contrasting processes which can threaten food production, water availability and energy supply.

Predicting to prevent is a tool for development.

The Foundation also supports research also for fragile ecosystems: observing and modelling how they feed and thrive, or suffer and reduce, and is a way of measuring the sustainability of our ecological policies.

Predicting to prevent is a tool for surviving.
