Scientific training on board: the ambition of Corsica Sardinia Ferries to monitor cetaceans and train future researchers’ took place on May, the 13th at Savona Campus.
The press conference ‘Scientific training on board: the ambition of Corsica Sardinia Ferries to monitor cetaceans and train future researchers’ took place on May, the 13th at Savona Campus.
Since 2008, CIMA Research Foundation has joined the project ‘Monitoring cetaceans in the western Mediterranean using ferries as a platform of opportunity’. The project foresees the use of Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) on board of ferries travelling from the continent to Corsica and Sardinia. MMO are university students who have been trained specifically for the sighting and identification of cetaceans in the open sea. MMO operate on board of ferries once a week.
This activity allows researchers to collect data on cetacean presence, regularly during the whole summer season. The project is supervised by ISPRA and it involves: CIMA RF, the University of Genoa, the University of Pise and the NGO Accademia del Leviatano.
CIMA RF is in charge of supervising two tracks, the one which cross Pelagos Sanctuary: Savona-Bastia and Nizza-Calvi. For this activity, 10 students from the University of Genoa are trained to become MMO.
During the press conference, the main results from the monitoring realized in 2008 and 2009 have been presented. CIMA RF President has then awarded all the students who participated to the project in 2009 with a MMO Diploma.
This summer (2010), the monitoring activity will start on June, the 1st on Savona-Bastia and on June, 6th on Nizza-Calvi.
