Snow cover map updated with satellite observations after the event of december 18th, 2009

The map, published by CIMA Foundation on the operational GIS software used by the Italian Civil protection Department, shows the extension of the snow cover over Northwestern Italy before (Dec. 10th - white) and after (Dec. 20th - cyan) the intense snowfall of December 18th.
The identification of the snow covered areas is obtained applying to the Moderate ate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations provided by the NASA satellite "TERRA" the image processing algorithms developed by CIMA Foundation researchers. The result is a map that identifies the snow covered areas under clear sky conditions. The gray part of the maps identifies the cloud covered areas. The intrinsic limits of the MODIS sensor does not allow identification of snow cover under dense clouds or fog.
MODIS images are provided by NASA.
